Pastel portrait

Sketching with sanguine and sepia conté pencils, colouring with soft pastels and a carbon pencil for some of the fine detail.

I'm think I'm getting better at achieving a likeness, the structure of the head, more accurately, more quickly. It's now getting frustrating that time is limited so perhaps I need to get someone to sit for a full session, make a few drawings and work up a final portrait.

Drawing highlights

It was an interesting night, I was the only student for the first half, trying to produce something more restrained on mid-tone paper shading by hatching and with white highlights. I was very wary of the white, it seemed to stand out too much, possibly because the paper was a bit darker than ideal, but this is the result.

Portrait season

Determined to get more proficient at portraiture this year so I've signed up for Chris Wood's classes again. Taking a class like this a great way to get regular practice along with a few pointers from an experienced artist and teacher.
This is the night's final piece.
