Further adventures in portraiture

I used a rudimentary grid system to map out the face this time and the likeness is better. Looking at it again I can see it needs much more shading on the dark side of the face; the left hand edge is weak, in fact there's not enough light and shade all round but it's better.
As a sketch made in little over 90 minutes, it's pretty good really. It would make a decent reference sketch for a full portrait.

So what did you think of The Big Painting Challenge?

Neat summary of the programme so far and a timetable of future episodes as well as a link to each episode's "how to" guide.
I have to say I agree with most of the conclusions drawn (see what I did there?) with a reminder that it's a contest for amateur artists (whereas, for example, there are a lot of professionals in Sky Art's Portrait artist of the year).
Anyway, a good and interesting post.

Week four

Last night's portrait session at halfway and "finished":

Proportions are still a bit dodgy but there is improvement. I think I need more technical input too.

It started so well

But ultimately it still doesn't really look like the model.

I was quite happy with the initial progress; drawing with sanguine pencil initially, then with sepia and carbon followed by added flourishes of coloured conté, but I think the problem came because I made her nose too long which throws out all the other proportions. It's not bad but I can do better.
